Old Vienna is a departure for me, as I compose primarily for piano. In 1992, I purchased a Korg synthetic module to provide a greater selection of sounds to play through an electronic keyboard, and when I heard "Silk Strings", the first two movements of Old Vienna flowed out. The rest of the composition came more gradually, and at least one movement, Back Home, was adapted from a piano piece. Old Vienna evolved into its present form around 1996, and since I compose/play by ear it took awhile to get it "on paper". I found The New American Quartet in an Internet search for a string quartet that was willing to perform new classical music, and they added some nice touches of their own. The CD has been well-received, with comparisons being made to a number of well-known composers (Mozart, Elgar and Bach, among others). Scott Shumaker |
