Stephen Szirmai
A selection of piano pieces representing the period following the death of the great classical
composer Beethoven to the neo-classical giant Bela Bartok. The intervening period is a time of
experimentation with new sounds, technique and content. I have tried to portray some of these
developments through the exciting technical innovations of Franz Liszt, through the romantic
poetry of Chopin, Schumann and Debussy, with the occasional dark overtones of composers
such as Rachmaninoff.
